The BMW “HiFi” system

The BMW HiFi sound system looks good on paper, but it doesn’t sound very good – and it certainly doesn’t qualify to be called “high performance”. It sounds harsh, dull, and weak – high in distortion, low in power. Here’s what it includes:

- Front tweeters
- Front midranges
- Underseat woofers
- Rear midranges
- Rear tweeters (2006-2009 vehicles)
- Six-channel amplifier with front/rear/woofer outputs


The amplifier also has some rudimentary sound processing in it, to make the HiFi speakers sound less annoying than they otherwise would. Fortunately, the balanced signal from the stock head unit to the amplifier is unprocessed.

Musicar Certified sound systems upgrade the most important speakers, as well as the amplification. The stock head unit is retained and all functions work just as before. All the new gear is plug-in and bolt-on. The installation is 100% removable and reversible.

Musicar systems for the E90 with HiFi are available in three levels of performance. Each has the following optional configurations:

- Rear-speaker delete
- Stock rear speakers retained
- Rear speakers upgraded

Each of the above can be ordered in a four-way architecture, with our OE-Look trunk subwoofer enclosure loaded with the appropriate woofer. In each of these systems, the underseat woofers are band-pass filtered and driven as dedicated midbass speakers. Our favorite systems, and the audiophile’s choice, are the “rear-speaker delete” packages. (We’ve been saying for years that rear speakers are a Commie plot.) However, if your car has Rear PDC parking sensors, we recommend rear-speaker retention so that the directional audible alert is also retained. If you listen to 95% rap and hip-hop, or techno and electronica, you may want to upgrade your rear speakers, since these genres do not benefit from the traditional stereo “front-stage” effect.

The majority of our clients order systems without the trunk subwoofer. Truly startling performance is possible without it – most people haven’t ever heard a system with two 8-inch woofers buried in the floor.

If you order a trunk-sub system, we limit how low into the bass region the underseat woofers play, and reserve these notes for the trunk subwoofer, which can play them with much less strain. This results in a four-way system – tweeter, midrange, mid-bass, and subwoofer – which many feel is the highest-performance system architecture there is.


Musicar Level One, Two, and Three packages

Level One

German-made speakers, far higher clarity and low-end extension than stock, much less distortion.

- 75-watt, four-channel fan-cooled Class G amplifier with 125wpc of dynamic headroom and internal second-order two-way active crossover filter used for woofer-to-midrange “handoff” – with   Musicar’s BMW bolt-in, plug-in preparation
- 100mm German-made poly-cone midranges with Musicar BMW bolt-in prep
- 25mm titanium German-made tweeters with Musicar snap-in, plug-in prep
- Second-order two-way passive crossover filters with Musicar in-door, plug-in prep
- 200mm German-made underseat woofers with Musicar plug-in prep

- In the trunk-subwoofer configuration, a 10-inch DVC poly-cone subwoofer is used, along with a 5-channel Class D amplifier with 75WPC and 300W to the trunk subwoofer. A fourth-order lowpass filter is used to derive the subwoofer signal.



Level Two

Speakers from Germany, warmer and smoother than Level One, more linear bass response. Our most popular system package.

- 75-watt, four-channel fan-cooled Class G amplifier with 125wpc of dynamic headroom and internal second-order two-way active crossover filter used for woofer-to-midrange “handoff” – with   Musicar’s BMW bolt-in, plug-in preparation
- 100mm made-in-Germany fiber-cone midranges – with Musicar BMW bolt-in prep
- 25mm made-in-Germany silk-dome tweeters – with Musicar snap-in, plug-in prep
- Second-order two-way passive crossover filters designed specifically for BMW 3-series – with Musicar in-door, plug-in prep
- 200mm German-made Level Two underseat woofers with Musicar bolt-in and plug-in prep

- In the trunk-subwoofer configuration, a 12-inch DVC poly-cone subwoofer is used, along with a 5-channel Class D amplifier with 75WPC and 300W to the trunk subwoofer. A fourth-order lowpass filter is used to derive the subwoofer signal.



Level Three

More high-end “sparkle” and “air”, better front-door midbass, and a very low-distortion trunk subwoofer option with greater power and accuracy.

- Lighter tweeter motors and 28mm domes for faster, more accurate high-frequency response
- Asymmetrical second-order LP, third-order HP passive crossover filter network
- Carbon-fiber-cone 100mm midrange and neodymium magnet structure

- The optional subwoofer is a 2-inch carbon-fiber-cone unit with a 5-inch voice coil winding
- Rear-speaker systems use 600W for the subwoofer from a dedicated Class D subwoofer amplifier
- Rear-speaker delete systems uses a 100×4, 500×1 5-channel Class D amplifier.
